Activity: Packaging
Overview
Packaging for the CD-ROM included a label for the CD itself and the jewel case inserts (a single page for the back cover and a folded sheet for the front). All of the pieces were to be designed by the graphic designer to match the contents of the CD. The CD writer and Project Manager were to create the text to be included. Other team members (as available) would help in the final printing and assembling of the pieces. Pre-packaged labels and liners were used to simplify the process.
Relevance
CD only.
Objectives
  • To create attractive packaging for the CD-ROM
Items needed from others to begin activity
  • Basic graphic design of the CD contents
Activities
Design CD label and jewel case inserts
The graphic designer created designs for the pieces based on the existing layout of the CD contents. The design was created using a template so that exact size was known from the beginning.

Compose text
The project manager and the CD writer collaborated to determine what information should be included on and inside the cover of the CD. Elements that the determined to be necessary were: the list of credits; special thanks; copyright information; system requirements; the URL for the website.

Integrate text into design
Completed by the graphic designer.

Print and assemble jewel cases
The jewel case inserts were purchased as a kit. The template allowed the design to be printed in the exact space necessary, though we chose to make the background color bleed over the perforations in the page so as not to leave a border. Because the front cover has to be printed double sided, it is important to make sure the images are not glossy-- glossy images peel off the page when they are run through the printer a second time.

Print and assemble the CD labels
The CD labels were also created using a kit, and the CD-Neato labeller. The graphic designer again used a template to create the labels in the right size. Team members printed the labels and applied them using the CD-Neato tool borrowed from the TELab staff. Labels can be applied to the CDs before they are burned.
