Importance of Maintenance

Unfortunately, this assumption is one of the reasons many web sites don’t live up to expectations, particularly those of the users. Once the site is in place, poor maintenance of links and content will have an effect similar to that of bad design. The cost of poor intranet navigation is high: at least 10 million dollars per year in lost employee productivity for a company with 10,000 employees (Nielsen, 1997). Inconsistent and minimal maintenance will magnify the effects of bad intranet navigation and weaken a strong navigation structure. Since the main benefit of an intranet as a corporate information infrastructure lies in organizational communication, a strong maintenance plan is critical to the healthy function of corporate intranets.
