Juxtaposition
One of the compositional tools used by designers to negotiate the relationship between text and image is the idea of juxtaposition. Juxtaposition is the relationship between the placement of separate elements in a visual composition (Meggs 45). For instance, text that overlaps an image can provide a different interpretive meaning than text located on the opposite side of a page composition.
