Thoreau Reader: Home - Walden
- Walden Photos
"My house was on the side of a hill, immediately on the edge of the larger
wood, in the midst of a young forest of pitch pines and hickories, and
half a dozen rods from the pond, to which a narrow footpath led down the
hill." - Walden, chapter 4, "Sounds"
This view clearly shows the path, no longer narrow, from the cabin to
the pond. The stone posts mark the position of the cabin, and the flat
stone within the posts covers the remains of the chimney that was discovered
in 1945.
